On November 7, 2020, we will gather in the Barony of Eskalya (Anchorage, Alaska) and step back in time to the tenth century and around the world to the southern Jutland peninsula.
Our feast will take place at the home of a wealthy landmaðr in coastal southern Denmark. A landmaðr, literally "landed man", fell in the stratified Norse society somewhere between the free farmers and noble jarls. The inscription on the Swedish rune stone Sö 338 used landmaðr to identify Thorsteinn, who "fell in the east in Garðar (Russia), commander of the retinue, the best of landholders." We will join the landmaðr and his húsfrú (mistress of the house) and their sveit (company, comrades) to welcome their honored guests, local farmers, and traders from near and far and celebrate a winter feast.
